Executives from Insys, the maker of Subsys, became the first pharmaceutical bosses to be handed prison time for their role in America’s opioid epidemic. 2018 Opioid Task Force progress report found that American doctors are prescribing fewer opioids, as well as increasing prescription drug monitoring program use. But it’s unclear whether lower rates of prescribing translate to fewer drug deaths on the streets. Coming in just shy of 90 minutes, Dr. Feelgood is a rich portrayal of William Eliot Hurwitz. Depending on whom you ask, Hurwitz is either a caring and innovative physician who, over the course of his decades-long career, helped the chronic pain of hundreds of patients countrywide.

West Virginia, a predominantly blue-collar state, exemplifies the cyclical nature of a drug crisis. A lot of people in these rural areas are employed in physical labor, get injured and receive pills through legitimate means. It’s a well-crafted exposé of addiction in what some call the “crossroads of America,” and one of the few that focuses on the role that Mexican cartels and drug trafficking have had in exacerbating the epidemic.

We examined the disciplinary records of AZ medical boards and found it can take years for physicians who overprescribe opioids to be penalized. After battling opioid addiction, they spend 18 months at a recovery center that is farm-based and located in Aurora, West Virginia. “Killing Pain is a pioneering series that shines light on the tragic story of how our state got in this position and why we are close to ground zero in terms of the addiction epidemic,” Attorney General Hunter said. “I encourage all Oklahomans watch this gripping documentary that covers the many tragic aspects of the crisis and how it impacts all of us.
Gibney sheds light on the changes the medical community was asked to make to accommodate opioids, including how doctors should expand and rethink the meaning of breakthrough pain, and how pain was the fifth vital sign. The case of Dr. Lynn Webster is also discussed as is his role in the death of Carol Bosley, one of his patients who died of an opioid overdose. Webster was a speaker for the pharmaceutical companies who received monetary compensation. Schneider started cautioning customers, who often did not show signs of chronic illness or pain, that the drugs they were prescribed might be too strong for their ailments.
